Supporters to hear if Blaencwm tunnel can become cycle route

Engineers have visited Wales' longest railway tunnel for the first time in 40 years to assess if it can be re-opened as a tourist attraction.

The Rhondda Tunnel Society wants to reopen the Blaencwm tunnel as a cycle and walk way.

It runs for 3 kms (1.8 miles), linking Blaencwm, Rhondda Cynon Taff to Blaengwynfi, Neath Port Talbot.

The old tunnel was buried during the Beeching cutbacks of the UK railway network in the 1960s.

Chairman of the Rhondda Tunnel Society, Stephen Mackey, said he was excited to find out if they can proceed with the plans.
