'Protect war memorials' residents across Wales urged

Communities are being urged to protect war memorials by taking advantage of a Welsh government grant.

The Grants for War Memorials scheme is offering funding of up to 70% of costs up to a maximum of £10,000 to conserve all types of war memorials.

Wales has over 4,000 memorials to those who have lost their lives fighting for their country.

Deputy Minister for Culture, Ken Skates said: "The memorials are a symbol of our need to remember."

He added: "There are some 4,000 war memorials in our communities across Wales, each telling a story of the lives lost and communities and families devastated by the effects of war.

"I would urge communities to take up this opportunity to protect and preserve our unique war memorials so they can remain an enduring reminder to future generations of the sacrifices made for our freedom."

The grants scheme has been developed in partnership with the War Memorial Trust and is administered by Cadw, the Welsh government's historic environment service.
