Flanders Welsh memorial sparked by honouring of fallen

A campaign to unveil a new memorial to all those from Wales who died in World War 1 was sparked by a visit to Flanders on a freezing winter morning, says monument campaign coordinator Peter Carter Jones.

He was visiting with his wife and two cousins when they discovered how local people were honouring the estimated 40,000 soldiers, sailors and airmen from Wales died between 1914 and 1918.

As the memorial is about to unveiled, Mr Carter Jones told Radio Wales' Oliver Hides how he was moved to lobby for the monument by those who wanted to keep alive the memory of the Welsh servicemen who gave their lives in the conflict.
