The number of people dying from drugs misuse in Wales fell by 20% to 168 last year, according to the Office for National Statistics.
There were 110 men and 58 women who died, with this a drop on the 208 recorded deaths in 2013.
Three-year local authority figures were also released along with the national total.
Between 2012 and 14, most drug-related deaths were in Swansea (55), Rhondda Cynon Taff (52) and Cardiff (50).
There were just five deaths in both Monmouthshire and Torfaen.
Swansea has one of the highest figures in Wales and England at 76 drug-related deaths per the equivalent of every 1 million of the population.
But this figure is nearly half of the 148 recorded for Blackpool, Lancashire.
