Speed camera plan for north Wales' 'Evo Triangle' road

The so-called Evo-Triangle links Pentrefoelas and Cerrigydrudion near Denbigh Moors

Average speed cameras could be placed on a 20-mile stretch of road in north Wales in a bid to deter drivers from treating it like a race track.

The so-called "Evo Triangle" has become a hotspot for high-performance cars in Conwy and Denbighshire and motoring magazine Evo also tests cars on it.

Four people have died and 20 have been hurt there in the past five years.

Now, a Welsh Government task and finish group has suggested cameras as a solution.

The three roads which make up the triangle connect Llyn Brenig, Pentrefoelas and Cerrigydrudion villages.

This summer, 21-year-old Shaun Goldstraw, from Leek in Staffordshire, was jailed for eight years for causing the death of Tracy Hayley and Darren Lowe from Bagillt after "using the road as a race track".

A Welsh Government spokesman said: "We are progressing the proposal with an offer of funding to allow Conwy and Denbighshire councils to carry out further feasibility work on this.

"They will then be able to put forward a well-developed bid for funding from the Road Safety Capital Grant 2018-19."

The development has been welcomed by residents and the area's representatives in the assembly and on local authorities.

But they are calling on the government to take action swiftly, as they fear more lives could be lost unless more is done to stop speeding in the area.

Conservative Darren Millar, the AM for Clwyd West, said: "I have been calling on the government to do something along this stretch of road for some time.

"Too many people have been travelling too fast in this area for too long. We have to put a stop to this as soon as possible."
