Damage warning with 70mph gusts for parts of Wales

Gusts of up to 70mph could cause disruption to parts of north Wales during the early hours of Thursday, forecasters have said.

The winds could affect travel and cause power cuts with some damage possible to buildings, the Met Office said.

The winds were due to move in on Wednesday evening but a yellow "be aware" wind alert has been revised to 00:05 GMT until 09:00.

Ferry services between Wales and Ireland have already been affected.

The warning covers all of the country but the north may experience the strongest gusts.

Large waves are expected off some western coasts, causing debris to be flung on to seafronts and coastal roads.

Met Office chief forecaster Andy Page said: "Gusts of 50-60mph are likely quite widely.

"There is some uncertainty over the peak gusts, but there is a small chance of winds reaching 70mph in places, most likely across coastal north Wales."
