An investigation has been launched after a historic Gwynedd pub was destroyed in the early hours of Sunday.

Crews from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service were called to the Rhiw Goch in Trawsfynydd at about 00:30 BST.

Police said they would like to speak to "a number of students" they believe were staying there at the time.

Incident commander Dave Hughes said no-one was hurt in the blaze and crews worked in "difficult conditions" to stop it spreading to other buildings.

The property was originally built as a farmhouse in the 12th Century and was the last public house in the village.

The cause of the fire, which is close to a holiday village, is not yet known but police and the fire service have launched a joint investigation.

Insp Jason Higgins of North Wales said: "We believe a number of students were staying at the location at the time and would be keen to hear from them."
