A man has been stabbed in a serious assault in Cardiff.

Armed officers went to Smeaton Street, Riverside, at 07:40 GMT on Friday.

South Wales Police said the man was in a stable condition at the city's University Hospital of Wales, but no arrests have been made.

It said officers were carrying out extensive inquiries in the area to identify and arrest those responsible and police cordons were in place to allow for forensic examination.

"Understandably there is shock and worry within the community when an incident such as this happens," a spokesman said.

Muhammad Ali, who has lived in the area for 35 years, said: "Because it happened so early... I'm walking my daughter to school [soon after] at 8:30. It scares me."

Another resident said: "I've lived here for a year and felt safe the whole time. I've not seen anything like this in the area before."

A shop worker, called George, said it was the first incident of this type he has known of in the area and said it was generally a safe place.
