Cardiff City Ladies team escaped injuries after a brick was thrown at their bus from a motorway bridge, scattering glass inside the vehicle.
It smashed through a glass sunroof and landed on an empty seat as the team were returning to Cardiff on the M4 after an away game at Oxford on Sunday.
Head coach James Fishlock said "luckily" no one was hurt.
"What goes through people heads? It's crazy and so dangerous," he tweeted, external.
Gwent Police said it was investigating reports of items being thrown at six vehicles on the M4 between junctions 23A and 24 near Magor, Monmouthshire.
Fishlock told BBC Wales that he and others were covered by shattered glass, but the stone landed on a row of empty seats.
"If that had hit anybody on any part of their body, it would have caused severe injury," he said.
"As luck would have it yesterday, because of the new Covid restrictions, we've had to increase the size of our coach so we had a 49-seater coach and the players were well spaced out."
He said the incident happened between 18:00 and 19:00 GMT.
"We just heard an almighty bang and a crack which has drawn all our attention to the ceiling of the bus, and there was just glass everywhere," he said.
Fishlock paid tribute to the driver whom he described as "really calm".

"He pulled over to hard shoulder straight away, contacted the police," he said.
"At that point we noticed there was another vehicle behind us on the hard shoulder which we think had also suffered damage."
He said some people on the bus later said they had witnessed people on a bridge throwing objects.
"Not wanting to be melodramatic, but it was a 49-seater coach travelling at 60mph.
"If that had hit the front of the bus or come through the windscreen, the worry is what could have happened."
Gwent Police said no-one was injured but three cars, a coach, lorry and van were damaged by bricks, rocks and stones after a group of young people on bikes were reportedly seen on the Waltwood Road bridge.
