The A470 between Builth Wells and Erwood is expected to reopen Thursday afternoon

A main road in mid Wales has been blocked after council officials said a "mini tornado" knocked over trees.

The A470 between Builth Wells and Erwood will not reopen before Thursday afternoon, Powys council said.

It came as two yellow weather warnings for wind and rain were in place across Wales.

The National Grid said almost 1,000 customers in Wales were without power at 11:30 GMT on Thursday.

Amroth seafront in Pembrokeshire was also closed on Wednesday due to pebbles and debris being thrown across the road from the high tides.

The council will assess when it is safe to reopen the seafront later on Thursday.

Two weather warnings are in place for Wales

A yellow weather warning for wind and rain remained in place for the whole of Wales on Thursday until 19:00.

A further warning for high winds has been issued, which covers mostly western parts of the country until midnight.

It includes Bridgend, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Conwy, Gwynedd, Anglesey, Neath Port Talbot, Pembrokeshire, Powys, Swansea, and the Vale of Glamorgan.

A series of thundery showers swept across southern parts of Wales on Wednesday, bringing heavy rain and high winds.

On Thursday night, there were still seven flood warnings in place, as well as 12 flood alerts.

The National Grid said there were 962 customers without power across south, west and mid Wales, with 14 incidents being dealt with.

This included a power cut in Newport, Pembrokeshire, which left 233 customers without electricity.

Another incident near Pendine, Carmarthenshire, left 64 properties without power.
