Wales has been warned to expect heavy rain from Sunday evening

Wales has been warned to expect heavy and persistent rain from Sunday evening until early on Tuesday.

The Met Office said there would be between 35-50mm (1.3-2in) in many areas, and 70-90mm (2.7-3.5in) is possible on high ground.

The warning is for south-east Wales, and Swansea, Carmarthenshire and Powys from 18:00 GMT on Sunday until 06:00 GMT on Tuesday.

The rain alert follows an earlier one for icy conditions.

The Welsh Ambulance Service said it was experiencing high call demand, especially with people having fallen.

The service said some patients had to wait for "many hours" for an ambulance or a call-back from a clinician via the 111 helpline due to demand.

"Extreme weather, coupled with a high call volume which are mostly reporting falls and breathing issues, has limited our capacity to respond safely and timely," said Sonia Thompson, assistant director of operations.

"We are sorry to everyone who has waited longer for their calls to be answered, and subsequently wait longer for an ambulance to arrive."

South Wales Police had earlier advised people to "only drive if it's necessary" due to "extremely poor" road conditions.

Crashes were reported by Gwent Police and North Wales Police, along with road closures due to ice.
