Flood warnings as rain leaves homes in Wales without power

A yellow weather warning was issued for Wales by the Met Office

Hundreds of properties have been hit by power cuts after a band of heavy rain caused flood warnings.

A yellow Met Office weather warning, external was in place in Wales until 18:00 BST on Wednesday that also covered north-west England.

The forecaster said up to 50-100mm (2-4in) of rainfall was likely, with as much as 150-200mm (6-8in) in some locations.

Earlier on Wednesday, more than 500 properties in Wales were without power.

Violent storm force, external gusts of 75mph (121km/h) were recorded at Capel Curig in Eryri National Park, also known as Snowdonia, as the remnants of Hurricane Lee, which killed one person in the United States, swept over the UK.

The National Grid reported hundreds of homes and businesses affected through the morning in Carmarthenshire.

Electricity supply was also cut to dozens of properties in Monmouthshire.

Eleven properties lost power in Catbrook near Tintern, 35 in Llanbadoc, near Usk, and more than 85 properties lost power in Cwmbran, Torfaen.

In north Wales, Scottish Power said there were outages affecting properties in Old Colwyn and Cwm Penmachno in Conwy county and in Gwynedd, affecting Bangor, Bethesda, and parts of the Llyn Peninsula.

Natural Resources Wales had several flood warnings, external in place affecting Swansea, Carmarthenshire and Powys.

What about the roads in Wales?

Flooding in Swansea caused the closure of the A4067 Neath Road at Morriston from junction 45 on the M4 to the Wychtree Roundabout on the A48 Clase Road.

In Gwynedd, flooding also caused the closure of the A487 Dyfi Bridge between A493 and Machynlleth station.

Motorists in Rhondda Cynon Taf had to drive through surface water on the A465 Rhigos roundabout near Hirwaun.

Strong winds caused speed restrictions and one lane closure on the M48 Severn Bridge.

Transport for Wales said flooding at Skewen, Neath Port Talbot, caused 15-minute delays to train services between the Port Talbot parkway and Swansea, while the service to Llanelli was suspended because of a fallen tree.

There were delays of up to half an hour on Irish Ferries between Pembroke and Rosslare in Ireland.

North Wales Police warned of a road closure on Holt Road in Wrexham, between the Tesco roundabout and Montgomery, also because of a fallen tree.

Were there weather problems in England?

In south-west England, a handful of properties were left without power.

In Somerset the National Grid reported about 50 properties where the electricity supply had failed. Another 23 were suffering problems near Truro in Cornwall.

No weather warnings were in place for southern England but a warning was in place, until 18:00, stretching from Manchester to Leeds and Carlisle.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for rain across south-east England from 16:00 until 03:00 on Thursday.
