Weather: Storm Babet to hit Wales with rain and wind

Storm Babet will last into the night on Wednesday

Gale-force gusts could sweep along the coast of Wales on Wednesday as Storm Babet hits the UK.

The effects of the second named storm of the season will last until Saturday, the Met Office said.

It is expected to cause flooding, power cuts and travel disruption across the UK.

Outbreaks of rain are expected in parts of Wales, while gusts could also occur along higher ground areas such Eryri.

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for rain and wind in other parts of the UK, but not in Wales.

The Met Office's Stephen Dixon said the weather has "the potential to disrupt travel plans... possibility of power cuts as well as the obvious risk of flooding".

"As you look at Wednesday, the first pulse of rain is looking to particularly influence Northern Ireland, Wales and the southwest of England, and into Thursday."

He added that further weather warnings are likely to be announced by the Met Office in the coming days.

The Met Office said the outbreaks of rain will sweep across Wales and is heaviest in the late afternoon on Wednesday.

Thursday will also see heavy and persistent rain and showers, and possibly even thunder.
