Weather: Warning strong wind gusts could disrupt travel

The Met Office warned people to be aware of large waves on the coast

Strong winds and rain are forecast for Wales on New Year's Eve, with gusts of up to 75mph (120km/h) in coastal areas.

A yellow Met Office warning for wind is in force for parts of south, mid and west Wales until midnight on Sunday.

It follows a separate wind warning which ended at 03:00 on Sunday morning, as well as a rain warning that was in place on Saturday.

Rail services have been disrupted across the weekend due to the wind and rain.

Rail replacement buses are running between Swansea and Shrewsbury, and Llandudno Junction and Blaenau Ffestiniog in north Wales.

The forecaster said strong gusts would also drive sudden, heavy showers across the area, which could bring hail and thunder.

The warning affects much of southern England and Wales

Some delays to road, air and ferry transport were likely, the Met Office said.

It also warned that some short-term loss of power and other services was possible.

"If you are on the coast, stay safe during stormy weather by being aware of large waves," the Met Office said.

It also urged people to take care if walking near cliffs, know their route and keep dogs on a lead.

The wind warning covers Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Monmouthshire, Neath Port Talbot, Newport, Pembrokeshire, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea and Vale of Glamorgan.

Natural Resources Wales has also issued a flood warning on the River Ritec in Pembrokeshire.

Fire crews from Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service were called out to deal with flooding in properties in Ferryside, Llansteffan and Abergwili in Carmarthenshire on Saturday night.
