Protesters say plans to turn The Corn Exchange into a shop would 'dramatically change' the town

Campaigners trying to stop a Powys pub becoming a supermarket say they have made a formal offer for the building.

They made the move after owners Punch Taverns halted plans to turn The Corn Exchange in Crickhowell, into a well-known supermarket following protests.

The town only has one national chain - Boots Chemist - and locals want it kept that way.

If the bid is successful, they hope to turn the building into small shops for independent traders with flats above.

Dean Christy, chairman of Corn Exchange Community Investment Group, said: "Our offer is a realistic one and a reflection of the value Crickhowell places on its town centre and the independent, family-run businesses who occupy it.

"Punch Taverns' continued willingness to work with the community clearly demonstrates that they are a company with a social conscious and we hope they will look favourably on our offer."
