Drink-driver's sentence cut over Miriam Briddon death crash

A Ceredigion man who killed a young fashion designer when he lost control at the wheel has had his sentence cut on appeal.

Gareth David Entwhistle, 35, of Ciliau Aeron, Lampeter, was jailed for five-and-a-half years at Swansea Crown Court in October.

He admitted causing Miriam Briddon's death by careless driving while over the drink drive limit in March 2014.

His sentence was cut to five years at London's Criminal Appeal Court.

Entwhistle, who was badly injured in the collision, was also banned from driving for five years.

Miss Briddon, 21, of Cross Inn, New Quay, was travelling to stay with her boyfriend when the crash happened on the A482 near Ciliau Aeron.

On Friday, Mr Justice Gilbart told the court Entwhistle's crime had "ripped apart" the lives of his victim's family.

Miss Briddon was a talented fashion designer who was due to graduate with a first class degree when her life was cut short, he added.

Entwhistle's legal team said he was now dogged by remorse and highlighted his previous impeccable character.

Mr Justice Gilbart ruled Entwhistle should have received more credit for his guilty plea.

"We consider that the sentencing judge was in error," he told the court.
