£35m Wrexham industrial estate link road to open early

Wrexham Industrial Estate's £35m relief road is due to open on 16 July

A multi-million pound link road to Wrexham industrial estate is set to open ahead of schedule.

The £35m project began in 2010 with the aim of improving access to the estate which houses around 300 businesses.

The north route runs from Borras roundabout to Bryn Lane roundabout, while the southern route runs from Cross Lanes to Five Fords.

Wrexham council said the access improvements were "long awaited" and the road is due to open on 16 July.

The new road is expected to ease access to the estate which employs over 7,000 people and offer improved links for potential business start-ups.

John Bradbury, head of environment at Wrexham council said: "The road has been built with 100% funding provided by the Welsh government and provides welcome and long awaited improvements to the north and south access to one of Europe's largest industrial estates.

'Benefits'

"The progress to date is excellent, especially with the fact that we are currently ahead of schedule.

"I know everyone is looking forward to the benefits this improved access will bring to employers and organisations on the Wrexham industrial estate."

Local Government Minister Carl Sargent will officially open the road.

A convoy of vehicles with links to the industrial estate will drive down the road as part of the official opening.

All of the dual carriageway is expected to be open to the public on the day and landscaping of the area will take place in the autumn.

A public inquiry was held ahead of the project getting the go ahead as local landowners raised concerns over disruption.

Work on one of the linked roundabouts did cause delays earlier this year, as contractors closed adjacent roads.
