Ruthin's Glasdir estate flood defence work starts in June

Flood defence work on a new-build housing estate in Denbighshire will remove any "remaining anxieties" of similar problems occurring again, says a councillor.

More than 120 homes were hit in November 2012 as the Glasdir estate in Ruthin was still being built.

The county council has just announced work on a £300,000 alleviation project will start in June.

Councillor David Smith said the work will take about two months to complete.

"We know it has been a long time coming, but there were a number of hurdles that had to be overcome before we could proceed," said Mr Smith, the council's lead member for public realm.

Last month, Natural Resources Wales gave approval to the council to protect housing with a 90cm (2.95ft) high wall which will be manufactured by Ruthin Precast Concrete.

Meanwhile, Clwyd West AM Darren Millar says new flood defence work will protect properties in Kinmel Bay affected by floods and storms last December and January after Conwy council was awarded £1.28m from the Welsh government to pay for improvements.
