Work has started on the next phase of plans to extend a cycle path network across Flintshire in a £1.2m project.

The Wales Coast Path has shut between Talacre and Ffynnongroew to allow the construction work to start. It is due to be complete by August.

The footpath and its adjoining new cycle route includes a section around the former Point of Ayr Colliery site on the coast.

Once complete it will extend a cycle route between Mostyn and Prestatyn.

Other routes have opened between Mold and Sychdyn and Northop and Flint to improve links between the communities.

The Welsh government has provided £715,000 towards the project, Linking Flintshire's Communities, with the council and other transport groups pledging the remainder.

Flintshire councillor Bernie Attridge said the aim was to improve "social cohesion" by developing a series of footpaths, cyclepaths and bridleways to link more rural parts of the county.
