Flintshire council is warning it may no longer be able to fund the county's flagship theatre to the tune of £800,000 because of budget cuts.

The authority needs to save £52.8m over the next three years so money it usually earmarks for Clwyd Theatr Cymru, Mold, is at risk, say bosses.

They want the Welsh government to help fund non statutory services like supporting theatres.

The Welsh government has been asked to comment.

Ian Bancroft, the council's chief officer for organisational change, said Clwyd Theatr Cymru, along with other services, has been identified in its budget planning process as being "exposed to major cuts".

He said the theatre currently operates on a budget of £5.3m with over half (£2.6m) earned through fees and sales with £1.8m from the Arts Council of Wales and £800,000 from the council.
