Two Flintshire primary schools to shut, council confirms

Two Flintshire primary schools will close in a bid to tackle surplus classroom places, it has been confirmed.

Ysgol Maes Edwin, Flint Mountain, and Ysgol Llanfynydd near Wrexham will both be shut at the end of this school year.

The decision was approved by the council cabinet on Tuesday following consultations that began in October.

Cabinet member for education, Chris Bithell, said it was in the "best interests of pupils".

"We understand that reviewing the future of any school is controversial and emotive," he added.

"However in these difficult times, we are challenged with balancing the sensitivities of community feeling on the one hand, with providing a high quality primary education offer which can be afforded and sustained."

The authority said the percentage of surplus places in the county remains above the 10% target set by the Welsh Government.

Ysgol Maes Edwin has about 70 pupils, while Ysgol Llanfynydd has 36 students.

They will all now be accommodated at other local primary schools.
