A closure-threatened primary in Flintshire is set to be saved after a secondary school agreed to take it under its wing.

Due to low pupil numbers, Welsh-medium Ysgol Gynradd Mornant in Picton had been earmarked to shut under county reorganisation plans.

But after discussions with secondary Ysgol Maes Garmon in Mold, the two governing bodies agreed to federate.

Flintshire council's Ian Budd called it an exciting opportunity.

He said: "It is an opportunity to overcome some of the barriers and challenges arising from the current pattern of transition from primary to secondary education."

Ysgol Maes Garmon's current head teacher will take over as leader at Ysgol Mornant next year.

It is only the second time in Wales that a primary school has federated with a secondary school, according to the Welsh Government.
