Rhyl Sun Centre: Demolition of water park set to begin

Demolition work is set to begin at a landmark water park in Denbighshire.

More than 300 people signed an online petition in August in a unsuccessful bid to stop bulldozers from moving in at Rhyl's Sun Centre.

Denbighshire council plans to replace the complex with a new aquatics centre elsewhere on the seafront as part of a multi-million pound regeneration.

The council said contractors would move on to the site on Monday before the phased demolition begins.

Denbighshire has previously said the centre, which was opened in 1980, was too expensive to run each year.

Clearing the Sun Centre site will pave the way for the council's plans to refurbish the adjoining Pavilion Theatre's ground and first floors, creating a green public space and more parking facilities.

From Monday, contractors will begin internal works leading to the removal of the roof and phased, control demolition of the rest of the building.

This will allow the ground to be reinstated for the proposed developments, the council said.

Recladding and glazing of the pavilion will also be completed during this stage of the project.
