Wrexham march over plan to cut fire engine and 24 posts

About 500 people have taken part in a march to campaign against plans to cut one of Wrexham's fire engines.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Authority has proposed cutting one of two full-time fire engines and 24 firefighter posts.

A consultation on the plan - which aims to save £1m by 2020 - is under way until December.

The march took place around the town on Saturday, starting at Island Green car park.

It follows a protest which was held in September.

Grant Mayos, executive council member of the Fire Brigade's Union, said the planned cuts would have an impact on the safety of the public and lead to further dangers for firefighters.

He added proposals to retain the existing cover but with one less fire engine and relying on part-time firefighters at other stations were "pie in the sky".

The fire authority said removing the second full-time fire engine at Wrexham would generate the savings required and, with the expected staff turnover in the next two to three years, the reduction in 24 posts could be made without the need for redundancies.
