Last of staff leave Anglesey abattoir as Welsh Country Foods plant closes

At its peak, the plant processed 640,000 lambs a year

The final nine staff are leaving the Welsh Country Foods plant at Gaerwen on Anglesey as it shuts down.

The food processing factory and abattoir was put up for sale by previous owners Vion last year.

But the entire workforce of 325 was laid off after a deal to buy its sister plant at Llangefni by 2 Sisters Food Group.

The Gaerwen factory had been the major lamb processing site in north Wales, handling 640,000 lambs a year.

But operations at the plant ended in April when the majority of the workforce was made redundant.

The final nine staff to leave on Friday include five managers, two engineers and two yard operators.

It is understood that the site will now be mothballed by its current owners, Amber Real Estates, which is a division of 2 Sisters Food.

Since acquiring the former Vion plant at Llangefni, 2 Sisters Food has increased shifts, advertising a further 300 posts to process chickens at the factory.
