Rescuers have warned walkers they need to be equipped to deal with wintry conditions on the mountain

A walker who slid 200ft (61m) down a snow and ice-covered stretch of Snowdon had a lucky escape, according to rescuers.

The man, described as poorly-equipped for the ascent in frozen conditions, did not have crampons or an ice axe.

The man, in his 20s and from London, was flown to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor by an RAF rescue helicopter.

A friend who also slipped and hurt his knee was able to walk off the mountain with members of Llanberis rescue team.

One rescuer said of the man taken to hospital: "He was battered and bruised but we don't think there's any serious injury. He is very lucky."

The team warned walkers that they needed the correct equipment in the wintry conditions on the mountain.
