A Gwynedd village has commemorated the 80th anniversary of the death of its most famous son, Lawrence of Arabia.

Thomas Edward Lawrence was an army officer and adventurer whose exploits fighting the Ottomans in World War One helped shape the modern Middle East.

He was born in Tremadog in 1888 and died in Dorset on 19 May 1935, six days after a motorcycle accident.

A bench and plaque has been unveiled in front of Snowdon Lodge, the house where the 46-year-old was born.

Falklands war veteran Simon Weston carried out the unveiling and the owners of the house, which is now a hostel, have also commissioned a life-sized bronze statue of Lawrence by sculptor David Williams-Ellis.
