A surf lagoon in north Wales which closed eight weeks early for winter due to mechanical issues resulting in job losses, reopens this weekend.

Sixty seasonal workers had their contracts terminated and eight staff were made redundant when Surf Snowdonia in Dolgarrog shut early in October.

The company said it had spent £1m on improvements during its winter closure.

The firm added it had taken on 72 staff, 34 of which were re-employed from 2015.

Much of the new investment has been spent on the mechanics of the motors which power the 300 metre (980 ft) wave-generating lagoon.

Andy Ainscough, managing director at Surf Snowdonia Adventure Parc said: "The number one thing we wanted to get right during our winter downtime was addressing the reliability of our Wavegarden, and we're confident that we've delivered on that.

"The last six weeks have been entirely dedicated to putting the motors through their paces and testing their resilience under pressure.

"We're really pleased with how they have performed and it's great to be going into the new season with that confidence," he said.

Other work carried out at the site includes a new obstacle course and improved accommodation and catering facilities.
