Snowdon Mountain Railway celebrates 120th anniversary

Swiss mountain railway experts constructed Snowdon's rail line

Snowdon Mountain Railway is to mark its 120th anniversary with three days of celebrations.

Trains have run from Llanberis to the summit of Wales' highest peak since 1896, except for during World Wars One and Two.

Celebrations will be held with entertainment and local traders will be selling food and drink.

They start on Friday at Llanberis station and will run each day from 10:00 BST.

In 2006, the summit cafe was demolished to make way for a new visitor and information centre

On the opening day of the railway on 6 April, 1896, two carriages were destroyed after one derailed, and due to miscommunication, caused a second to crash into it

Children were often taken on school trips to the summit using the railway post-war

After World War One, there were issues of coal shortages so old war boots were donated to be used as fuel

Welsh singers Katherine Jenkins and Bryn Terfel and cyclist Sir David Brailsford have all had carriages on the railway named after them
