New £13m Gwynedd special school opens to pupils

A new £13m special school has officially opened its doors to pupils in Gwynedd.

The new Ysgol Hafod Lon in Penrhyndeudraeth replaces the old school in Y Ffor near Pwllheli.

It has room to accommodate 100 pupils from across the Meirionnydd and Dwyfor areas - double the old school.

Gareth Thomas, cabinet member for education, said it delivered a pledge to provide the "very best educational facilities for all our pupils".

"The new Ysgol Hafod Lon boasts the latest facilities and resources including modern and well-equipped classrooms, a hydrotherapy pool, therapy rooms, sensory equipment, outdoor areas for play and learning," he said.

As well as classrooms and facilities to meet the requirements of pupils with additional educational needs, the new school also boasts a six-bed residential unit.

The school has been funded by both the council and the Welsh Government's 21st Century Schools programme.
