The next Nato summit will be held at the Celtic Manor Resort, Newport, on 4 and 5 September 2014, Prime Minister David Cameron has confirmed.

It will be the UK's first Nato summit since 1990.

The Nato meeting is expected to be attended by US President Barack Obama on his first visit to Wales.

Mr Cameron has said previously that it was "Wales' turn for one of these big events."

During a visit to Cardiff, he told BBC Wales: "This is an important Nato summit. It's the end of Afghan mission and important to reflect on the future of Nato."

The last time Britain hosted the Nato summit was 23 years ago in London when Margaret Thatcher was prime minister.

But next year it will be the first time the summit has come to Wales with the Celtic Manor, which hosted golf's 2010 Ryder Cup, chosen as the venue.

It will also mark the 65th anniversary of Nato.
