2,000 new affordable homes to be built across Wales

The new houses are on top of a 1,000 affordable homes plan announced last autumn

2,000 new social and affordable homes will be built in Wales in around three years time, ministers have announced.

An estimated 5,000 jobs will be created during construction, but it is to not yet decided where the homes will be.

The plans are in addition to 1,000 new affordable homes announced last September, the finance minister said.

Jane Hutt also said there would be an extra £18m for schemes to help reorganise health services, including £9.5m for Swansea's Morriston Hospital.

That project will include a new building for clinical support and diabetic services.

There is money for new neonatal services at Carmarthen's Glangwili Hospital and to develop an Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service, to mirror a service in Scotland to transport very urgent cases, particularly in rural areas.

Ms Hutt said: "We want to boost growth and jobs while delivering first class public services across Wales.

"The projects receiving funding today are about more than just money - they create jobs, improve public services and ultimately make a difference to people's lives."
