Jeremy Miles: Quick guide to Wales Labour leader hopeful
- Published
Wales' Education Minister Jeremy Miles is one of the two men competing to be the country's next first minister. Here's what you need to know.
The BBC has also published a profile of his rival, Economy Minister Vaughan Gething.
He was brought up in a mining town
Jeremy Miles was born in 1971 and brought up in Pontarddulais as a native Welsh-language speaker. He attended Ysgol Ystalyfera in the Swansea valley during the 80s alongside many children whose fathers were part of the miners' strike.
He would be Wales' first gay leader if he wins
Mr Miles came out as gay during his third year at Oxford university. He has said he used to "wonder if there was a place in the world for someone like me" while growing up in a working-class family in their mining community.
He previously tried to become an MP
Mr Miles stood as the Labour candidate in the safe Conservative English seat of Beaconsfield in 2010, coming third. He also stood for selection to be Labour's candidate for Aberavon in the 2015 general election, narrowly missing out on the Welsh constituency by Stephen Kinnock.
His brother-in-law was a Welsh rock 'n' roller
His sister is married to Cleif Harpwood, a lead vocalist with the 70s rock band Edward H. Dafis. In 1974 the band released a song called Tŷ Haf (Holiday Home) about the controversial issue of second home ownership in Welsh-speaking areas.
He was in charge of Wales' Brexit policy
Mr Miles is currently the Welsh government's education minister. However, he's also served as the government's top lawyer and Brexit minister, and oversaw Wales' recovery from the pandemic.
He previously worked for major TV companies
After graduating with a law degree, Mr Miles taught at Warsaw university in Poland. He then practised as a solicitor in London and held senior posts at ITV and US television network and film studio NBC Universal, before being first elected to the Senedd in 2016.
