Framing Wales: Kim Howells on art
The former Labour minister and Pontypridd MP goes back to his artistic roots for a BBC Wales TV series.
He told Jamie Owen and Louise Elliott of BBC Radio Wales how his parents in Penywaun encouraged his creativity but wanted him to become a mine manager.
Howells became an art student and showed his firebrand tendencies by leading a sit-in at Hornsey College in London in 1968.
His four part series on Welsh art begins with a look at how a resurgence of the Welsh nation around 100 years ago influenced artists like Augustus and Gwen John, David Jones, and Christopher Williams.
Framing Wales begins on BBC Two Wales on Thursday 24 February at 1930 GMT
