An inquest has been opened and adjourned into the death of a man who waited four hours in an ambulance outside a hospital.

Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board has said a patient died two hours after his admission to the Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend.

Former miner Michael Bowen from Ogmore died at the hospital last Thursday.

South Wales Police are investigating at the request of coroner Andrew Barkley.

The hearing in Aberdare was told how Mr Bowen began to feel unwell on the evening of 15 January.

An ambulance was called at 05:00 GMT the following morning and Mr Bowen was taken to hospital.

He died at 14:05 GMT after collapsing in the accident and emergency department.

Judith Lewis from the health board told the coroner an internal investigation was already underway.

She said all the doctors and nurses who tended to Mr Bowen would be called to give evidence.

The inquest was adjourned until 22 May.

The ambulance service is also investigating what happened.
