Football fans greet Fifa World Cup trophy in Cardiff

Football fans got a chance to see the Fifa World Cup trophy up close as it visited Cardiff ahead of this summer's tournament in Brazil.

About 6,000 tickets were on offer to catch a glimpse of the 18-carat gold trophy at The Hayes on Sunday.

Former Wales players Terry Medwin and Colin Baker, who were part of the team that competed in the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, also attended.

The visit was part of the trophy's 267-day world tour of 88 countries.

Fans were able to have their photo taken with the trophy and take part in football-themed activities and a skills session.

This is the third time the coveted trophy has been on a tour around the world.

So far its visit to Britain has included stops in Southend, London and Glasgow, and from Cardiff it will travel to Manchester.

By the end of its journey it will have travelled 100,000 miles over six continents - which is 3.75 times around the world.

Wales' only appearance at the Fifa World Cup was in 1958 in Sweden where they were beaten by Brazil in the quarter finals.

The current team has a world ranking of 44 but failed to secure a place in this year's competition.

England is the only home nation to make it through the qualifying rounds to Rio 2014.
