A new £1.5m terminal has opened at Newport docks which will protect cargo ships in severe weather.

The 25m-high (82 ft) structure at Cargo Services on the River Usk is used while ships are loaded and unloaded.

Construction on the terminal, which the company says is the first of its kind in Wales and can handle cargo vessels weighing 8,000 tonnes, took 14 months.

The demand for it was spurred on by the need to import and export products for customer Tata Steel.

Managing director at Cargo Services John Davey said: "It is extremely important not only to us but the whole of the Welsh economy that Tata Steel continues to flourish and be successful."
