Landmark buildings in Porthcawl's harbour area, including its former Customs House and pilot lookout tower, are to be brought back into use.
The £1m restoration project is financed by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Bridgend council and Cadw, the Welsh government's historic environment service.
Work begins this week.
Other properties, including the former Knight's Arms pub, have also been earmarked for upgrades.
