The families of two young men killed in a crash in Merthyr Tydfil have said their "only comfort" is that the best friends were together when they died.

Rhys Jones, 18, and Ryan Gibbons, 20, both from Bargoed, Caerphilly, died on Sunday when the Seat Ibiza they were in hit a telegraph pole.

A third person remains in hospital in a critical condition.

Police have arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The family of Rhys Jones said he was a "loving and wonderful son who enjoyed life to the full".

'Like a son'

"Rhys was a loved big brother. He was humble and kind," they added.

"Our thoughts also go out to Ryan's family for their loss as they had been friends since childhood and Ryan was also like a son to us."

Ryan Gibbons's family said he was a "well mannered, polite young man" who doted on his young daughter.

"Our only comfort, is knowing that you were with your best friend, Rhys," they said in a statement.

The fatal collision took place at about 22:30 BST on Sunday evening and police said no other vehicle was involved.

Officers have asked witnesses to the crash or anyone who may have seen the white Seat Ibiza prior to the incident to contact them.
