Caerphilly hepatitis A outbreak spreads to Penywaun school

Hepatitis A is a viral infection which can cause flu-like symptoms

Two new cases of hepatitis A have been confirmed, following an outbreak at a school in Caerphilly county.

There are now 11 confirmed cases, the latest being a pupil at Ysgol Rhydywaun in Penywaun, Rhondda Cynon Taff.

Public Health Wales said there was "no suggestion that transmission of the virus has occurred within the school," and both new cases had links with Glyn Gaer Primary School in Gelligaer, where nine people have been diagnosed.

Letters are being sent home to parents.

Heather Lewis, from Public Health Wales, said: "We are confident that to date, all the public health actions needed to control this outbreak have been taken and that the risk to the public remains low. However, due to the very long incubation period of hepatitis A we may see more cases."

Public Health Wales is continuing to investigate the outbreak with Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and Caerphilly council.
