Cwmbran car park legal order plan to cut town disorder

Car parks blighted by anti-social behaviour in Torfaen could become the subject of a legal order to prevent further disorder.

Torfaen council and Gwent Police said people were using parking lots in Cwmbran for nuisance driving and to drink alcohol.

Car parks in the town centre, Morrisons supermarket, St David's Road and on Edlogan Way could come under the order.

Those found breaching it could be fined or arrested.

The council said "activities" in the areas were having a detrimental effect on the quality of life of residents and shoppers.

The order builds on an existing alcohol ban, external brought in to cut anti-social behaviour in the area in 2004.

If approved, the order would ban the following:

  • Using car parks for any other reason than parking in a marked bay

  • Any activity which would endanger the public and property

  • Any activity which is offensive, anti-social, indecent or causes distress to the public

  • The use or possession of controlled drugs, drug paraphernalia, psychoactive substances or the intent to supply or share such substances

  • Noise that is prejudicial to health or is a nuisance

  • The consumption of alcohol

Residents can have their say on the plans, external until 12 October.
