Urgent road changes will be made from 30 November following "chaos" at Pwll-y-Pant roundabout, Caerphilly, council leaders have said.

The 12 months of work on the roundabout, external, known locally as the Cedar Tree interchange, started on 9 October.

Four lanes will be introduced around the site to reduce the impact on local businesses in the run-up to Christmas.

Business owners have previously sent an open letter to Caerphilly council about the roadworks "chaos" affecting trade.

Two lanes will be available on the A469 Llanbradach bypass, so traffic will not have to merge into one lane when travelling southbound.

A further two lanes will also be available around the roundabout, which will help increase the capacity and traffic flow around the area.

Business leaders, employing a total of 5,000 staff, have previously warned that firms in the town face closure if changes are not made on the busy road between Caerphilly and Ystrad Mynach.

Councillor Sean Morgan, deputy leader of Caerphilly council said: "We welcome these changes which will no doubt bring some early Christmas cheer to motorists, shoppers and businesses in Caerphilly town centre.

Free parking will also be available in the town's pay and display car parks from 9 - 23 December.

The council will monitor the new traffic arrangements, before reverting back to single lanes at some point in early January 2018.
