Flu jabs needed 'immediately' after hospital outbreaks

At-risk people and NHS staff are being urged to get flu jabs immediately as cases of flu hit the community and local hospitals.

Tonna Hospital in Neath, Llynfi Ward in Maesteg Hospital and Ward G in Neath Port Talbot Hospital have cases of confirmed or suspected flu.

There are also cases at Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board.

It comes as patients are asked to avoid "busy" A&E departments at Morriston and the Princess of Wales hospitals.

Those with symptoms are instead advised to see their GP or local pharmacist, or use the minor injury units at Neath Port Talbot and Singleton hospitals.

Infection control measures are in place at the various hospitals to limit the spread of flu.

The vaccination is free to anyone in one of the following at-risk groups:

• Pregnant women - any stage of pregnancy

• 65 years and over

• Aged six months or older with a chronic condition such as stroke, asthma, emphysema, diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease or liver disease

• Immunosuppressed or living with someone who is

• In long-stay residential care

• Carers

• Community First Responders

• Children aged 2, 3 and 4 years on 31 August 2014

• All children in school year 7 (vaccination sessions will be held in school)

People with symptoms are also advised to use a tissue when coughing and sneezing, throw the tissues away after use and wash hands to kill infection.
