Patients told to avoid A&E unless 'seriously ill' this winter

Patients have been warned to only attend A&E at busy hospitals if they are seriously ill due to increased pressures on the health service this winter.

The plea from health officials at Swansea's Morriston hospital and the Princess of Wales hospital in Bridgend comes as the boss of the NHS in Wales said more hospitals may need to postpone operations to cope with emergencies.

Dr Andrew Goodall said a choice may have to be made between emergency care and non-urgent surgery.

He said the advice is based on increased pressures to the health service this winter.

Health correspondent Owain Clarke reports.
