Zohran Mamdani: From immigrant roots to mayor of New York City

Thirty-four-year-old state assemblyman and self-identified democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani is the new mayor of New York City. He's known for his progressive politics and grassroots appeal. Born in Uganda and raised in Queens, he's the city's first Muslim elected mayor. Before politics, he worked in housing advocacy and performed as a rapper. His campaign focused on affordability, public transit, and social justice.
