From the archives: Ratan Tata's interview from 1997

In 1997, when India marked 50 years of its independence, the late Ratan Tata spoke to the BBC.

It was just a few years after liberalisation, and the then Tata Sons chairman took stock of the challenges and opportunities that faced the conglomerate at the time. He also spoke about the group's global ambitions. Soon, Tata would go on to make some high-profile global acquisitions - some of them worked, while others didn't.

The BBC is republishing this interview after Tata's death this week.
