'I didn't expect to get one of these new homes'

Mother-of-two Jacqueline Lowry is among the first tenants in a generation to move into new homes which were built by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE).

Since the mid-1990s, social housing in Northern Ireland had been built by housing associations, but in 2020 the NIHE got the go-ahead to start building again.

There are about 47,000 people on the waiting list for suitable social housing in Northern Ireland.

Ms Lowry's young family was previously living in a second-floor apartment which had a problem with vermin because of nearby building work.

The new housing development in north Belfast, which will provide homes for six families, are specially designed to be warm, energy efficient and keep bills down.
