Scheme sends food from local farms to forks

"We can change the world very quickly if we change our choices," says a farmer who provides fresh fruit and vegetables straight from his fields to the forks of students.

Jamie Carr and his wife Mary have run Blacklands Organics in Watchfield, Oxford for nearly 10 years and two years ago they signed up to Good Food Oxfordshire's Farm to Fork initiative.

It means as soon as their produce is picked it gets cycled by courier to one of the many nearby University of Oxford colleges that have signed up to the scheme.

Sam Crickshank who is the executive chef at New College, said: "It's just a fantastic opportunity to be able to use locally sourced produce".

He added that the eco-friendly initiative is "great" as it allows him to have a connection with local suppliers that he might not get with large wholesalers.

Mr Carr said the project has benefited his farm because it has meant that he has been able to provide his stock to large institutions like the university, rather than just individual buyers.

"If we're going to have an economy that's made up of small scale, local producers, we need to be selling to where lots of people are," he said.
