Jim Wren: 'I was imprisoned for over three years'

Jim Wren was a 21-year old Royal Marine from Sussex.

Just days after the Pearl Harbour attack, he was on board the battle cruiser HMS Repulse - part of a British Naval force in the South China Sea, near Malaysia.

Jim survived the sinking of the ship and three and a half years as a prisoner of war in Sumatra.

At 105 years-old, Jim Wren is the last survivor from HMS Repulse and one of the oldest living veterans from World War Two.

We Were There aims to collect as many first-hand accounts as possible by 2025, the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two, to preserve veterans' accounts for future generations.

The BBC is currently working on the project with a number of partners including the Normandy Memorial Trust and Royal British Legion. Some of the stories collected may be shared with our partners and used on BBC News platforms.
