Rhino calf with feeding issue now stomping around

A baby rhino that struggled with the "logistics" of feeding with his mother is now healthy - and even does little stomps when hungry.

The unnamed southern white rhino was born at Whipsnade Zoo, external in Bedfordshire on 2 October to mother Fahari and father Sizzle.

At first the calf appeared to struggle with how to suckle, leaving vets concerned the newborn would not get the nutrients needed - but, with time, he eventually worked out what to do.

Rhino keeper Alex Simpson said: "To suckle, he needs to stand under her belly and by her back legs, so we think at first they were struggling to work out the logistics of everything.

"But he's feeding well now, and it's really sweet to see them figure out all these new experiences together."

It is hoped he will join the other rhinos, where visitors can see him, before the end of October.
